Custom Built-In Bunk Beds
We designed and built this custom built-in bunk bed in-house, in the same shop where we build our custom cabinetry. Everything except the welded safety rail was built in our shop, then assembled on site. It is built into the house and is permanent. This is built like a room, not a bed you assemble from a box: a queen below, a full above, oak stairs, drawers, shelves, adjustable pendant reading lights, and power at both bunks.

A built-in bunk we built
This is our built-in bunk project, start to finish. The lower bunk holds a queen mattress and the upper holds a full. The owner is an avid reader, so the bottom bunk got a bookshelf, and both the top and bottom bunks got adjustable pendant reading lights.
How we built it
Designed in 3D first. We drew the whole bunk in 3D before cutting anything. Because the shop work followed those drawings, everything fit perfectly when it went together in the room.
Framed like a room in a house. The frame is 2×4 and 2×6 studs, built the way you would frame a room, then covered with sheetrock and birch plywood. The whole frame and the stair stringers were built in our shop and assembled on site. We removed the room’s carpet, then recut and reinstalled it to fit around the bed.
Solid, quiet beds. The queen rests on a torsion box for stability and no squeaks. The upper mattress sits on 2×6 framing at 12-inch centers. It is very solid.
Handmade oak stairs. The stairs were built like stairs in a house, on real hand-cut stringers. We used 3 stringers instead of 2 to prevent squeaks and stair bowing, and installed the treads and landing with construction adhesive. Each stair tread was handmade from oak to match the wood floors outside the room. The risers are furniture-grade pine plywood, chosen because it paints smooth with no visible grain texture.
Safety rail. The safety rail is the one part we did not build in our shop. It was custom welded at a metal fab shop.
Tongue and groove. Tongue-and-groove boards cover the wall behind the bunk and the inside of the queen bunk, run in contrasting directions.
