Drawer slides are what make a drawer open and close smoothly. Choosing the right ones early matters because the cabinet and drawer construction has to match the slide type.
Main Types
Undermount Slides
Hidden under the drawer. Clean look, full use of the drawer box width, and usually come with soft-close. Preferred on most higher-end custom cabinets.
Side Mount Slides
The most common. Mounted on the sides of the drawer. Available in roller (budget) or ball-bearing (smoother and quieter). Reliable and easy to install.
Center-Mount Slides
Single slide under the center of the drawer. Less common now, but sometimes used on traditional or lighter drawers.
Useful Features
- Soft-close — Prevents slamming
- Full-extension — Drawer pulls all the way out so you can reach the back
- Heavy-duty — For large or heavily loaded drawers
What We Typically Use
On most of our custom cabinet work we use soft-close undermount slides, often Blum TANDEM with Blumotion, because they operate smoothly and hold up long-term. Side-mount ball-bearing slides are a solid, more budget-friendly option when needed.
