Process:

Shower waterproof sheets are adhered to the prepared walls using thinset, creating a continuous barrier.

Preparation:

• Install a pre-sloped shower base be sure to use the thinset recommended by your products manufacturer.  Some require modified thinset, some unmodified.
• Adhere the sheet membrane to the floor and walls, ensuring proper overlaps and sealing of seams and corners.
• Adhere bands to the areas where walls meet one another. 
• Adhere premade inside and outside corners where walls meet the floors.

• Advantages: Exceptional shower waterproofing, excellent crack isolation membrane, durability, versatile substrate compatibility.
• Disadvantages: Complex installation often requiring professionals, more expensive.
• Brands: Schluter Kerdi, NobleSeal, Laticrete .

Process:

A liquid membrane is applied to the prepared walls forming a seamless, flexible barrier.

Preparation:

• Clean and prime the substrate.
• Apply the waterproofing membrane to the entire shower floor area, extending it at least 6 inches up the walls. Allow it to cure completely.
• Mix the mortar according to the manufacturer’s instructions. If using a latex admixture, add it to the water before mixing with the dry ingredients. Create a “dry pack” mortar bed around the drain, filling the gap between the drain flange and the liner. This should be about 1 inch thick and firmly packed.
• Install metal lath or reinforcing mesh over the liner, extending it to the walls.
• Apply the second layer of mortar, bringing the total thickness to about 1 ½ to 2 inches. Smooth and level the surface, ensuring the slope remains consistent towards the drain. Allow this layer to cure completely (usually 48 hours) before proceeding with tile installation.
• After installation of a structurally sound floor and walls have been constructed apply the liquid membrane onto both. A minimum of two coats is required to achieve desired results. Apply Tile directly to the dried and cured membrane.

• Advantages: Easy application, bridges cracks, suitable for irregular surfaces.
• Disadvantages: More expensive, careful surface preparation is needed, may have substrate limitations.
• Brands: Laticrete Hydro Ban, Custom Building Products RedGard.

Process:

An all in one solution. Comes as a fiberglass floor, usually set on the subfloor in mortar for ridgidity. The shower walls come in sections and are installed directly to the studs in the shower area.

• Advantages:
• Inherently waterproof shower due to its seamless construction.
• Among most failsafe shower waterproofing methods.
• Quick and easy installation.
• Affordable option.
• Low maintenance and easy to clean.
• Disadvantages:
• Limited design flexibility compared to custom tile showers.
• Can be prone to cracking or fading over time.
• Less durable than tile showers.
• Brands: Sterling by Kohler, Swanstone, DreamLine
