Kitchen Island and Cabinet Toppers in Houston Heights

Klein shop. Houston Heights kitchen.

This one sits in the Heights near 19th Street.

The wall boxes were worth keeping. The room needed height, an island that belonged there, and a hood cabinet that actually fit the updraft — not a full gut.

We built the island and the new uppers in the shop, installed them on site, and left the paint to the homeowner’s painter. Same crew from the first measure through the last door swing.

What we kept

Existing wall cabinets and the basic run. No point tearing out boxes that were still straight and useful.

What we built

Island. Custom island built in the shop. Maple butcher-block top. Open shelves on the seating side so it does not read as a solid box in the middle of the room. Drawers on that same side for the stuff you actually grab while you cook.

Toppers. New glass-door cabinets on top of the existing uppers. That is the height change people notice from the living room. Lights in the openings. Crown after the toppers were set.

Hood cabinet. The old cabinet over the range came out. We built a new one around the updraft hood so the vent is in the box, not hanging off a stock hood cover.

Doors and fit. New doors on the work we added. Last pass is lining every door so the gaps match down the run.

Paint

We installed raw. The homeowner hired their own painter. That is a normal split on this kind of job: we build and set, they own the finish schedule.

Why this job, not a full custom kitchen

A lot of Heights kitchens are the same problem. The house is fine. The original boxes are short, the hood is wrong, and there is no island that belongs in the room.

If the boxes are sound, toppers and an island beat ripping everything out. If the boxes are the problem, we say so and price a full build. This one was the first path.
